The NSW Opposition is warning about a potential lack of funding for the North Coast as the Minns Labor Government prepares to unveil its second budget tomorrow.
North Coast communities are suffering after the past year saw cost-of-living relief slashed, housing accessibility down, crime rates rising, and the health and education systems buckling under pressure, all while the region is still recovering from the 2022 floods.
Shadow Minister for the North Coast Gurmesh Singh has called on the Treasurer to provide support in this year’s budget, to address these critical concerns.
“As we approach budget day, it is crucial the Government addresses the pressing needs of our community, instead of slashing our funding like we saw in last year’s budget,” Mr Singh said.
“Significant cuts to education and health are leaving locals worse off and taking a substantial toll on our teachers and front-line staff as they navigate systems in crisis.
“Coffs Harbour homelessness is also rising to the highest rate in NSW over the last twelve months and investment in housing and cost of living relief has never been more important.”
“The Minns Labor Government needs to show the North Coast it is 100 percent behind them as they continue to rebuild a stronger and more resilient region.”
Member for Myall Lakes, Tanya Thompson said this city-centric Minns Government is completely disconnected from the needs of their region.
“Cutting cost of living measures implemented by the former Coalition Government like the active and creative kids vouchers, and the regional seniors travel card has been absolutely devastating for local families, Mrs Thompson said.
“We’re facing rising crime rates, particularly from youth offenders and the Premier continues to turn a blind eye to our calls for more resources, as locals are left living in fear,” Mrs Thompson said.
“If these issues were happening in the city, no expense would be spared by Labor, and I am deeply concerned that this budget will once again fail to address the needs of Myall Lakes and the broader NSW North Coast.”
“Our hospitals are stretched, and our families have had cost of living relief stripped from their pockets and we urgently need the Minns Labor Government to do better in this year’s budget.
“Our communities need to be assured that they are being prioritised and not left behind, so we will be keeping a close eye on what is handed down tomorrow.”
