THOMPSON’S CALL FOR REINSTATEMENT OF BACK TO SCHOOL VOUCHERS

Posted January 23rd, 2024

Tanya Thompson, Member for Myall Lakes, joins NSW families in urging Premier Chris Minns to reinstate the Back to School vouchers that were axed in the Minns Labor Governments first Budget.

Back to School vouchers were a Coalition initiative that aided parents with $150 per child to alleviate the financial burden associated with school supplies, uniforms, and other school essentials.

Tanya Thompson MP said that last year alone, almost 28,000 Back to School vouchers were redeemed by families in the Myall Lakes electorate.

“Our community relies on the assistance provided by the Back to School vouchers, and the significant number of redemptions in the Myall Lakes demonstrates the genuine need for this support.”

“It’s disheartening to see the Minns Labor Government cut such a valuable program without understanding the impact on families in our region.”

Shadow Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell said the axing of Back to School vouchers follows Chris Minns’ decision to break his election promise and slash Active Kids, Creative Kids and First Lap vouchers.

“The Opposition understands the importance of helping families with the cost of school, sports and extracurricular activities – that’s why we implemented these vouchers.”

“Families are paying the price for Labor’s Budget mismanagement. The Opposition will continue to fight for families and for more support to address the increasing cost of living,” Ms Mitchell said.

“We need the Premier to recognise the real-life consequences of his government’s actions and reinstate the Back to School vouchers immediately,” concluded Mrs Thompson.
