Member for Myall Lakes, Tanya Thompson, and Federal Member for Lyne, Dr David Gillespie, turned the first sod this week to officially commence the Iron Arena Expansion project – a state-of-the-art sporting facility in Taree.

“This is a project that my predecessor Stephen Bromhead was so passionate about. I am so excited to see this project finally moving ahead,” said Mrs Thompson.

Initially announced with funding of $8.251 million in November 2020, the Iron Arena project faced delays due to COVID-19 disruptions and increased costs of building materials.

“Despite these challenges, the project’s budget has been revised to $12.9 million to ensure completion, with the facility expected to be operational by 2025.

“The Iron Arena will be a huge asset for our region, not only supporting local sporting opportunities but also attracting major events and boosting our local economy,” said Mrs Thompson.

The Iron Arena is set to expand the current Saxby Stadium, with the addition of four multi-purpose courts that will accommodate a variety of sports, including basketball, futsal, volleyball, and indoor hockey. The facility will also have the capacity to host trade shows, concerts, and other major events, positioning Taree as a destination for regional, state, and national competitions.

“I can’t wait to see this facility come together, to shoot some hoops, and to see our sporting athletes enjoy this facility for years to come,” said Mrs Thompson.

The project is a joint initiative, supported by the NSW and Commonwealth Governments through the Bushfire Local Economic Recovery Fund.
