Tanya Thompson, Member for Myall Lakes, has confirmed that the Manning Base Hospital cafeteria will remain open for the foreseeable future, following strong community support and staff efforts to prevent its closure.
After protests and a petition signed by over 4,000 people, Mrs Thompson joined the call, advocating for HealthShare NSW to reverse its decision as a matter of urgency.
“The Manning Hospital cafeteria is essential, a space for staff that are already extremely under resourced and at breaking point to relax from the exhaustion of their work,” said Mrs Thompson.
“Closing this valuable facility would have added further strain on our health workers, and I am relieved that the decision has been reversed.”
Minister for Health Ryan Park confirmed the cafeteria’s continued operation, noting the lack of suitable alternatives in the region.
“HealthShare NSW and the Hunter New England Local Health District value community feedback. Any changes to this decision will be made in consultation with Manning Hospital staff and community stakeholders,” Minister Park said.
The decision is a significant win for hospital staff, who rallied to save the facility, with Health Services Union representatives acknowledging the cafeteria’s role as an important support for the workforce and visitors alike.
