Member for Myall Lakes, Tanya Thompson, joined the Upper Lansdowne community today to celebrate the hall’s 100th birthday and announce a $10,218 boost from the NSW Government’s Community Building Partnership to complete urgent repairs.
“This hall has held this valley together for a century, from bush dances and birthdays to sheltering people in emergencies,” Mrs Thompson said.
“This funding will keep the hall doing what it does best, bringing people together.”
The grant will fund replacement of rotten verandah posts and railings, repairs to a section of timber decking, and restoration of the long timber benches that have welcomed countless community members over the years.
Hall secretary, Helen Breingan, said, “A hundred year old building does need constant repair and this funding will make a big difference to the building’s future, as we can fix the area’s most in need of repair, so the hall can keep serving the community for many years to come.”
As part of the centenary program, Mrs Thompson officially unveiled a commemorative plaque, a tribute to the volunteers, families and original builders whose generosity in 1925 created this very space.
“I want to thank the Centenary Committee for a wonderful celebration today, the displays, memorabilia and activities brought the history of this place to life,” Mrs Thompson added.
